What to do in the event of a gas leak

Make sure you are prepared for what to do in the event of a gas leak in your home.  If you can smell gas or you think you might have a gas leak, call the Gas Emergency Services immediately on 0800 111 999.  Don't hesitate to ring - the phone line is free and open 24 hours, 7 days a week.

What else can you do?

While you wait for help to arrive, you can help make the area safe by opening all the doors and windows to ventilate the area.  Extinguish any naked flames immediately, don't turn on or off any electrical switches, and turn off your gas supply.

Where is my gas supply switch?

If you don't already know where it is, familiarise yourself with your gas supply switch now, before any problems arise.  In newer houses, the gas meter and isolation valve are often outside in a meter box.  In older houses, you will probably find your switch under the stairs, beneath the kitchen sink, or in the garage.  Turn off the gas by turning the handle a quarter turn so the lever is at 90 degrees to the gas pipe.
